A metronome is an electronic or mechanical tool that allows to give rhythm and time. When a musician is practising on his instrument (piano, guitar, violin, flute, …), he needs to be on time to be sure to play well. The metronome allows him to make sure of that.

How do I use the display and buttons on the online metronome?

The display allows you to see the value of the rhythm and tempo you are on in real time. It allows you to calibrate the measurement of your game on that number. It should be noted that the display always starts with a default. Depending on the mode you're in and how long it takes to view, the display can take on different values. You can also incorporate a countdown so it can start a few seconds later and give you time to place your support on the instrument.

Understand the function of the different buttons on the metronome

As you've seen, many buttons are present on this online metronome and all correspond to a specific function. They allow you to make the different adjustments you need to practice at your own pace depending on your support. You can change the different values and modes present at any time to accompany your evolution over the exercise. Here are the different buttons and their functions:

– Volume: this button allows you to adjust the volume of the metronome;

– BPM: this allows you to speed up or slow down the tempo of the metronome;

– Start: This button allows you to start the metronome;

– Tap: this feature allows you to go up or down the tempo depending on the speed of your vclics on the button;

– Beat: This button allows you to adjust times and measurements. The metronome will then settle on 3 times, 4 times, 5 times, etc…

Each music or exercise has measurements, which give the tempo and structure of the music. For example, a waltz is always composed of 3 bars. Today's pop music is quite often set to 4 bars. The value is changed only in a small way. At the same tempo, each measurement has the same duration and the interval between each measurement is always the same. This is an essential mode of the metronome to be able to play at the right pace.

By default, the metronome display is set to 4 measurements.

You can adjust the metronome's measurements based on your exercise and support. To do this, you can click on the icons – or – located on either side of the word Beat, at the bottom of the metronome. This allows you to change the number of measurements.

You can also add a countdown to have time to prepare before the metronome is launched.

You've seen, many modes are present on this online metronome: beat, tap, bpm, … It can be confusing when you're used to working with nothing and you're not used to change. But how do you use them properly?

Already, start by choosing which ones are useful for your exercise. You won't necessarily need to use everything. For example, you can only combine the bpm with the beat times and then press 'start' to the right of the metronome. This will already give you a good pace to adopt. You may have difficulty keeping up with the pace for the first few seconds, but you'll get used to it over time.

Note that it is important to use a metronome to make sure you are not late or ahead of the different times. The advantage of this tool is that it works alone and loop after adjustment: it is a kind of automation of musical learning.

Meaning beat by minute, the bpm is a unit of musical measurement to have a defined value of rhythm.

On a metronome, it is possible to choose precisely the value of the bpm. Simply move the dot on the cursor in the direction you want to decrease or increase the value.

We advise you to operate in stages. If you feel you are not comfortable with the current bpm, feel free to make a change in value to reduce speed. For example, 120 bpm can be quite fast when you start. Go down to 60 to halve the speed (or double the time interval between each beat). Once you're comfortable on the 60, increase from 20 to 20.
