Cerberus Audio Ice9 Automute is a free utility which protects your speakers, your ears, and your nerves from dangerously loud output levels. Ice9 Automute's soft-muting function will begin to attenuate the gain before a single sample over the threshold has passed. Sounds like a settings problem. The default is to automute everything, so you have to intentionally un-mute. There is an option to use both black and white lists. Just click on the icon in your browser, and then 'AutoMute Options' at the bottom.
